As the coming millennium approaches, we face daunting questions about the earth's future. What impact will global warming have on the planet's climate? Will overfishing and pollution destroy the sea's productivity, on which millions of people depend? Can the oceans provide new drugs to treat the diseases that continue to plague us? These are only some of the issues that scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography are now addressing.
As the new director of Scripps, my challenge is to ensure that we continue to ask the right questions about our global environment so we can continue to provide the public and policymakers with the right answers. With the many challenges facing us, being good stewards of the environment will be as important to our survival in the next century as guarding the nation's security has been in the last.
Please join us in our quest.
