Our Mission...to seek, teach, and communicate deep scientific understanding of our oceans, atmosphere, Earth, and other planets for the benefit of society and the environment. |
|
| Human activity has never before had such a dramatic impact on our environment. Our planet is changing, and it is vital to our very survival to understand those changes and to know which are caused by human activity. We must understand the ocean, the dominant force on our planet, and how it interacts with the atmosphere, the physical earth, and the web of life. At Scripps, we are on a voyage of discovery to develop that understanding. | |
| For almost one-hundred years, Scripps Institution of Oceanography has conducted a continuous search on the seas and in the laboratory to understand the marine environment. Scripps is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for marine science research and graduate training in the world. | |
| An independent biological research laboratory founded in 1903, the institution joined the University of California in 1912 and was renamed in recognition of the support of the Scripps family. Originally a research station of the University of California, Berkeley, Scripps later became part of the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1960, Scripps director Roger Revelle founded the University of California, San Diego, the institution's current home. | |
| The scientific scope of Scripps has grown to include not only biological research, but physical, chemical, geological, and geophysical studies of the earth, its ocean, and its atmosphere. More than 300 research programs are under way today in over 50 countries in a wide range of scientific areas, including studies of global warming and long-term climate change, El Niño, the marine food web, earthquakes, pharmaceuticals from sea life, satellite remote sensing of the earth and atmosphere, and coastal ocean processes. | |
| Join us on our voyage of discovery by supporting research and education programs at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. |
